Everything you need to know before you rent

Waste removal is not the most exciting part of your project, so we try to make it the easiest. If you are renting a dumpster for the first time, you probably have the same dozen questions everyone does: what it costs, what size, whether you need a permit, and what you cannot throw in. Whether you are a homeowner clearing a garage in Holland, a property manager turning over a rental or a contractor running a job in Zeeland, the answers below are the ones we give on the phone. If yours is not here, call (616) 344-9760 and a real person on our local team will answer it.

Part 1

Pricing

Not covered here? Call (616) 344-9760 and ask.

How much does it cost to rent a dumpster in Holland, MI?

We do not publish a price list. Pricing depends on the dumpster size, the type of debris, the delivery location and the rental length. You get a flat-rate quote on the phone that can include delivery, pickup and disposal with no hidden fees. Every quote includes a weight allowance: typically 2 to 3 tons on a 10 yard, 2 to 3 on a 15, 3 to 4 on a 20, 4 to 5 on a 30 and 5 to 6 on a 40.

Is delivery and pickup included in the price?

Your quote can include delivery, pickup and disposal, along with the standard rental period. There are no hidden fees and no hidden fuel surcharges.

What causes extra charges?

Two things. Going over the included weight, where the container may be weighed and an overage fee applies, and keeping the container past the rental period, which carries a daily or weekly fee. We explain both in advance.

Do you charge more for heavy materials like concrete or dirt?

Heavy materials use up the weight allowance fast, which is why they usually go only in the smaller dumpsters, 10 or 15 yards. Mixed with other debris they may need separate pricing. Tell us roughly how much there is, and we help you stay within the allowance.

What payment methods do you accept?

Major credit and debit cards. Payment is typically collected when your booking is confirmed to secure your delivery date. Recurring contractors can ask about custom billing. Where an independent provider handles the rental, billing may be handled by that provider, and we tell you on the call.

Part 2

Sizing

Not covered here? Call (616) 344-9760 and ask.

What size dumpster do I need?

Think about your project size and debris type. A 10 or 15 yard suits small cleanups, roofing, concrete or dirt. A 20 suits home remodels and landscaping. A 30 or 40 suits construction, demolition or large cleanouts. Count the job in pickup truck loads: about 3 for a 10, 4 to 5 for a 15, 6 for a 20, 9 for a 30 and 12 for a 40. Weight decides for dense material.

What happens if I order too small?

Too small and you may need another pickup. Too big and you pay for space you do not use. When in doubt, describe the job and let us size it. If your project grows, we can often swap your dumpster.

What is the biggest dumpster you offer?

A 40 yard: about 22 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 8 feet high, roughly 12 pickup loads, with about 5 to 6 tons included. It is our largest roll-off container.

How full can I fill it?

Keep debris below the top edge. If a dumpster is overfilled, it may not be legal or safe to haul. Evenly distributed loads also help with safe pickup.

Can I rent a dumpster for a roofing job?

Yes. Our 10 and 20 yard dumpsters are popular for shingles, tar paper and roofing debris. Shingles are heavy, so tell us the roofing squares and we estimate the weight before you load. A building that is not a privately owned home of four or fewer units may need EGLE's asbestos notice before renovation or demolition starts.

Part 3

Permits, placement and local rules

Not covered here? Call (616) 344-9760 and ask.

Do I need a permit to have a dumpster delivered?

It depends on the town and where the container sits. The City of Holland applies a refuse collector licence to the hauler, and we check the City's rules before booking. For a spot in a street or right-of-way we check the City's rules and the placement with you first. Our city pages cover each town.

Can the dumpster go on the street if my driveway will not fit it?

In most cases the street is the fallback, not the plan. We check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking, and we plan the delivery around what the town allows. Tell us when you book.

Is my road a city street or a state highway?

Not always obvious. I-196 and US-31 are state highways, as are M-21, M-40 and M-45, and any other state route. MDOT requires a permit from anyone who wants to use state highway right-of-way for anything other than normal vehicle or pedestrian travel, so we keep containers out of the right-of-way of I-196, US-31, M-21, M-40, M-45 or any other state route. Tell us the address and we check.

Why do your city pages mention hauler licences?

Because in Michigan, licensing is local. EGLE does not license ordinary solid waste haulers, but some towns do. The City of Holland applies a refuse collector licence, the Village of Spring Lake requires a hauler licence, and the City of Grandville lists a waste haulers licence. Each town page says what that town requires.

Are there hours for delivery and pickup?

Some towns set them. We do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs. The phone is answered around the clock, and we tell you about any hours that apply to your town when you book.

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

We take precautions to help protect your property, and protective boards can go under the rails on request. If you are concerned, you can also place plywood or boards under the contact points before delivery. Keep it off soft ground and grass.

How much space does the truck need?

A flat, solid surface such as a driveway, pad, gravel or pavement, with room for the container: about 14 feet long for a 10 yard, 16 feet for a 15, and about 22 feet for a 20 and up, all about 7.5 feet wide. The truck needs about 60 feet of clear approach, more if it has to turn, and about 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of wires and branches. Move cars, trailers and bins before the drop.

How does the dumpster rental process work?

Call (616) 344-9760 and tell us about your project. We help you choose the size and deliver it, often the same day or the following day when available. You fill it with debris, junk or waste, and we pick it up once you are done.

How fast can you deliver?

In many areas around Holland and nearby communities we offer same-day or next-day delivery, depending on availability. Call early in the day for the best chance of same-day service.

What are your hours?

The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs.

How long can I keep the dumpster?

The standard rental period is 7 days, stated on your quote. If you need more time, call and we can often extend it for a daily or weekly fee. If you finish early, call and we arrange an early pickup.

Do I need to be home for delivery or pickup?

No. As long as we know where to place the dumpster and the area is clear of vehicles and obstacles, you do not need to be there.

Can I move the dumpster after it is placed?

Please do not. It is placed where the truck can reach it for pickup. If it needs to go somewhere else, call and we handle it.

Can I book multiple dumpsters at once?

Yes. We rotate containers on long jobs and set up swap-outs and multiple containers for contractors and property managers.

Part 5

Service area

Not covered here? Call (616) 344-9760 and ask.

Which communities do you serve?

Holland and 14 communities around it: Zeeland, Hudsonville, Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Jenison, Grandville, Saugatuck, Douglas, Hamilton, Allegan, Fennville, Coopersville, West Olive and Ferrysburg. Each has its own page.

Where are you based?

At 215 Charles Dr in Holland, MI 49424. Most bookings are made by phone.

Is service different in the towns farther out?

Mostly the rules and the distance. Approx. road miles from the yard run from about 4 for Zeeland to about 26 for Coopersville, and each town page says what that town requires. Same-day depends more on availability the further out you are.

Do some towns restrict who can deliver a roll-off?

Yes. The Village of Spring Lake requires a hauler licence, the City of Grandville lists a waste haulers licence, and the City of Allegan restricts placement in its right-of-way. Each city page says what that town asks for, and we check its rules before booking.

Part 6

What we take

Not covered here? Call (616) 344-9760 and ask.

What can I put in a dumpster?

Many common materials: wood, drywall, tile and flooring; furniture and household junk; yard waste, branches and brush; roofing shingles; and small non-hazardous appliances. Concrete, brick and dirt usually go only in the 10 or 15 yard. If you have a question about a specific material, call us before loading it.

What can't go in a dumpster?

We cannot accept paint, solvents or oils, fuel, liquids, tires, batteries, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders or propane tanks, medical waste, asbestos, flammable or toxic waste, or fridges and A/C units that still hold refrigerant. Electronics: ask us first. Michigan law bans certain things from landfills (MCL 324.11514): more than a de minimis amount of yard waste, whole tires, used oil, lead-acid batteries, regulated hazardous waste, bulk liquids, medical waste (with exceptions) and asbestos waste, unless the landfill meets the federal asbestos rule. The guides explain where each item goes instead.

Can asbestos-containing material go in a dumpster?

No, never in ours. EGLE runs the federal asbestos rule (NESHAP) in Michigan. Residential dwellings of four units or less under private control are not subject to it, but other regulated demolitions need notice through EGLE's MiEnviro Portal at least ten working days before work starts, even when no asbestos is present. Michigan also bans asbestos waste from any landfill that does not meet the federal asbestos rule (MCL 324.11514).

Can I put concrete, brick or dirt in a dumpster?

Yes, but usually only in smaller dumpsters such as the 10 or 15 yard. Heavy materials have weight limits for safe transport, and mixed with other debris they may need separate pricing. Check with us first.

Can I put a mattress or an old appliance in?

A mattress, yes, and small non-hazardous appliances. A fridge, freezer or A/C unit only once the refrigerant has been properly handled.

What happens to the debris after pickup?

We work with approved local disposal and recycling facilities whenever possible, and materials such as metal, concrete and certain yard waste may be separated for recycling. Michigan law says solid waste may go only to a licensed disposal area (MCL 324.11512(2)).
