Dumpster Size Guide for Holland and West Michigan

Start with the project

  • 10 yard: small kitchen or bathroom remodels, roofing with limited materials, concrete, tile or asphalt, and garage or single-room cleanouts.
  • 15 yard: garage, basement or attic cleanouts, flooring and carpet removal, small deck or fence removal, and yard cleanup.
  • 20 yard: kitchen and bathroom remodels, whole-home cleanouts, roofing jobs and landscaping. It is our most popular size for residential and small construction projects.
  • 30 yard: multi-room or full-home renovations, estate or rental property cleanouts, and construction debris such as drywall and lumber.
  • 40 yard: full-scale construction or demolition, commercial building cleanouts, large renovations and community cleanup efforts.

Not sure which one? Call (616) 344-9760 and describe the job. We will help you pick the size.

The five sizes side by side

All five are about 7.5 feet wide. The 10 and 15 are the shorter boxes, and the 20, 30 and 40 are about 22 feet long and get taller. Pickup loads and standard trash bags are rough guides to volume, and the weight allowance is the weight each size includes. Weight allowances run from 1 to 6 tons, based on size.

Most people underestimate the pile. Walk the job before you call, count the pickup loads you expect, and tell us the material. We can help estimate the weight from your project details.

Weight is a separate limit

A container can be full before it is heavy, or heavy long before it is full. Furniture and household junk are bulky and light. Heavy materials such as dirt or concrete go only in smaller dumpsters, such as the 10 or 15 yard, to ensure safe transport. Think about the weight of the material, not just the volume.

If your load goes over the included weight, we apply a reasonable overage fee based on the extra weight. Tell us what you are loading before delivery day, and we will help you choose a size that fits the material.

Measure the spot before delivery

Check the length first. The 10 is about 14 feet long, the 15 about 16 feet, and the 20, 30 and 40 about 22 feet. All are about 7.5 feet wide. Clear a path for the truck, look up for branches and utility lines, and pick a flat, stable surface such as a driveway or paved area.

A 20 yard fits most residential driveways in Holland, but measure your space before you call. The delivery day guide covers the spot in more detail.

Five ways to get the size right

  1. Count the debris. Estimate the pickup loads, or measure the flooring or roof coming off.
  2. Allow for bulky items. Furniture takes more room than it weighs, so break down large pieces where you can.
  3. Ask about weight. Dirt and concrete add weight quickly, so they belong in a smaller box.
  4. Keep yard waste separate. It has its own accepted list. If your project mixes it with other debris, call us first.
  5. Call early. In many areas we offer same-day or next-day delivery, depending on availability. Call early in the day for the best chance.

Frequently asked questions

Not covered here? Call (616) 344-9760 and ask.

What size dumpster do I need for a roof?

Our 10 and 20 yard dumpsters are ideal for roofing materials such as shingles and underlayment. Shingles are heavy, so check the weight allowance as well as the volume.

What size is best for a whole-home cleanout?

Our 20 yard handles both bulky and loose items for a whole-home cleanout. For estate or rental property cleanouts with a lot of furniture, a 30 yard is built for that job.

What size for a garage cleanout?

A 10 yard suits a garage or single-room cleanout, and a 15 yard handles garage, basement and attic cleanouts. Tell us what is in the garage and we will recommend the size.

Will a 20 yard fit my driveway?

Usually. It is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, and it fits most residential driveways in Holland. Choose flat, stable ground and clear a path for the truck.
