Yard waste: the local specifics
Michigan defines yard waste as "leaves, grass clippings, vegetable or other garden debris, shrubbery, or brush or tree trimmings, less than 4 feet in length and 2 inches in diameter, that can be converted to compost", and stumps are not yard waste (MCL 324.11506(17)). More than a de minimis amount of it may not go to a landfill (MCL 324.11514(1)(d)). A container is for the pile that is bigger, heavier or sooner than curbside pickup can handle. Do I need to bag the brush?
No. There are no bags and no repeated trips. Load it as it comes, cut long limbs and logs to fit, keep everything below the top edge, and keep household trash, treated wood and plastic out of it.
Can I put dirt in a yard waste dumpster?
Yes. Soil, sod and mulch are accepted. Soil is heavy, so it goes in a smaller box or its own load within the weight limit. Tell us it is part of the job when you book, and we plan the loads.
Can I put a whole tree in?
