Dumpster Permits and Street Placement in West Michigan

Two questions decide where a container can go: does the city, village or state allow it in that spot, and what does the local code ask of the company that hauls it? Here is what we found and what we check before we book.

Dumpster Permits and Street Placement in West Michigan

The driveway comes first

A dumpster on private property, such as your driveway, parking lot or job site, does not need a permit. A spot on a public street or right-of-way may need one, through the local authority, and we can guide you through the process.

Holland: the City license

A refuse collector license applies in the City of Holland. We check the City's rules before booking, so tell us the address and the exact spot you want. We are licensed & insured.

Towns around Holland

Here is how each town we serve reads its rules, based on the code we could read. Where a town restricts placement or requires a hauler license, we check its rules before booking. Where we found no rule, we check with the local office.

  • Spring Lake (Village): a hauler license applies in the Village. We check the Village's rules before booking.
  • Grandville (City): the City lists a waste haulers license. We check the City's rules before booking.
  • Allegan (City): the code restricts containers on residential parcels and in the right-of-way. It is not confirmed whether that covers a rental roll-off, so we check the City's rules before any placement.
  • Fennville (City): the code sets rules for garbage receptacles kept at the rear of homes, and it does not say whether a roll-off counts. We check the City's rules before booking.
  • Saugatuck (City): containers do not go on public property. We check the City's rules before booking.
  • Douglas (City): the code bars depositing refuse in any street, right-of-way or alley. We check the City's rules before booking.
  • Zeeland, Grand Haven, Ferrysburg, Hudsonville, Jenison, Coopersville, West Olive, Hamilton and Spring Lake Township: we found no rule in the code we could read. That is a search result, not proof that no rule exists, so we check with the local office before booking.

Ottawa and Allegan County

A draft Ottawa County solid waste ordinance says haulers "shall obtain appropriate licensure." We found no confirmation that it has been adopted, so we check before booking. We found no Allegan County hauler or placement ordinance.

State highways and the state

We keep containers off state highway right-of-way, including I-196, US-31, M-21, M-40, M-45 and other state routes. If you are not sure who maintains your road, tell us the address and we will check the placement with you before delivery.

The state does not license ordinary solid waste haulers. EGLE says its solid waste rules do not require a license, permit or registration from EGLE to haul solid waste, while some local areas require a local business license. That is why the local rules above matter.

What to tell us when you book

Give us the address, the exact spot you want, and whether that spot is on your property or on a street. We check the rules for that place before we confirm delivery. Call (616) 344-9760. We are open 24 hours, 7 days.
